  1. Do you have to buy a magic package to be able to buy the dining plan? My cousin is doing a semester at Disney and can get tickets and hotels at 50% off for family while she is down there. I've been reading that the dining plan isn't really a great value anyways but it will just be my husband and I going so maybe it would be worth it? Would appreciate any thoughts/advice. Thanks!

  2. Tara, you cannot buy the dining plan unless you purchase a Magic Your Way package (which is essentially tickets plus a resort stay). And I don't think you'd qualify, since your cousin will be getting those at a discount. I agree that the dining plan is not the best deal for a lot of families (especially those with small children who don't eat much, like mine). However, if it's free and it's the only discount your eligible for, it's a good deal! Personally, we usually go for a room-only discount if it's available and purchase tickets separately. However, if my husband and I were to go alone, we might consider it since we would enjoy eating slowly in some of the restaurants we usually skip with the kiddos. One day maybe...

Since you're getting a deal on tickets & resort, I'd just pick one or two table service restaurants you want to try and just splurge and pay out-of pocket for those. Then you can eat more inexpensively the rest of the trip (see my food posts for ways to do that!).

    Hope this info helps!

  3. do you know if you qualify for the quick service dining for free, can you upgrade to the dining plan and get a credit toward it for the free quick service? Also, I couldn't find anything about it, but can you trade two quick service for one table service?

When Disney is offering free dining plans, you can upgrade from the plan you qualify for (based on which resort you choose) by paying the difference between the higher priced plan and plan you qualify for. No, unfortunately, you cannot trade 2 quick service credits for a table service credit.
