Thursday's Tip

Trying to track down a favorite character in the Parks? Check with a Cast Member, especially those assisting other characters (in the Magic Kingdom, they are usually identified by their white shirts with yellow sleeves that have Mickey gloves all over them). If the cast member doesn't have immediate or first-hand knowledge of where/when you can find a character, he or she can radio to find out for you!

2010 Star Wars Weekends Announced

Star Wars Weekends will once again be held at Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2010. The dates are: May 21-23, May 28-30, June 4-6, and June 11-13.
This is a really fun time to be at WDW, especially for true Star Wars fans. It's a chance to meet Star Wars celebrities--anyone from characters in the original movie to voice characters from the newer animated series. There is a lot of "special" merchandise that you won't see anywhere else except for during this event.
And if you're not such a big Star Wars fan, it can be a great time to visit the other three parks which tend to have lighter crowds, especially during events such as the afternoon parade.

Sounds Like It's Official: Captain EO Returns to Disneyland

Well, they hinted at it weeks (months?) ago...and it looks like it's really happening. Captain EO will return to Disneyland. Read the full story here.

Thursday's Tip

Makeovers at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and the Pirate's League are tons of fun for your little princess or pirate--but they're also pricey! Want to give your child a mini-makeover at a fraction of the cost? Today's tip is about one of the best kept secrets in Walt Disney World: the Harmony Barber Shop.

Yes, believe it or not, there is a working barber shop nestled in a corner on Main Street of the Magic Kingdom. For around $22, you can actually get a haircut! For a bit more, bring Junior for his first haircut that comes with a set of Mickey ears. And for around $10, your child can get a special "do" of colored gel and Mickey confetti.

Harmony Barber Shop is a fun step back, and a nice quiet spot to relax and enjoy a little pampering.

The Princess and the Frog

copyright The Disney Co.

Have you seen it? We went on opening weekend and contributed to the 25 million opening. My girls gave it two thumbs way up! I enjoyed it too, although I don't think it would make it into my Disney Top 5. Still, a solid princess story that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

As you probably know, Disney animators have quite a sense of humor and tend to interject "inside jokes" into their films. And The Princess and the Frog is no exception. If you haven't seen it yet, or if you plan to go back for a second viewing, here are a few things to watch for:

  • In the opening sequence, as the song "Down in New Orleans" plays, you can see a bystander shake out the Magic Carpet from Aladdin.

  • When we meet Mama Odie, during the song "Dig a Little Deeper," she is sorting through some items and the Lamp from Aladdin is spotted among them.

  • During the Mardi Gras parade, one of the floats has the figure of King Triton from The Little Mermaid on it.

I'm sure there are more...these are just the easiest to spot. (In fact, my 6-year-old spotted King Triton!) Have fun viewing and looking for others!

Thursday's Tip

Just a reminder that today is a Double Points day at Disneymovierewards.com. I just entered two Blu-ray codes for a total of 500 points! There is also a bonus code for 50 points: HEART.

Now on to today's tip--or, rather, a group of tips. Here are some ways to build anticipation (as if you need to!) for an upcoming WDW vacation:
  • Make a paper chain to count down the days until your trip. Decorate it with Disney-themed stickers. Tear off one link per day until you leave.
  • Celebrate the "12 Days of Disney" before your trip. Give your children a small item each day that they will use on their vacation. (Think sunglasses, plastic rain poncho, autograph book, pen, lanyard, etc.)
  • Make a countdown necklace out of cereal (Fruit Loops work well) and yarn. Put descending numbers between the cereal and eat an "O" and tear off one number each day.
  • Share a Disney trivia questions each night at dinner for the month prior to your vacation.
  • Do a Disney version of "Elf on the Shelf." Put a stuffed Mickey (or other Disney character) somewhere in the house for your children to find. Each day, Mickey moves to a new spot. To make it more fun, attach a new message each day to the toy, such as "Ariel will meet you in her Grotto in 6 days!"
  • Use and advent calendar. These are easy to find this time of year, and some are not necessarily Christmas-themed. Put stickers, Disney Dollars, or small trinkets inside.
  • Have the princesses (or Pooh characters, or whomever is your child's favorite) send the kids some mail. Buy Disney postcards and send a "can't wait for your visit" message.

These are just a few ideas. The possibilities are endless. Got any great ideas to add?

Disney Movie Rewards

Are you a member of Disney Movie Rewards? If not, you should be! You get lots of cool, free stuff just for buying Disney DVDs (and you know you do that anyway!). To join, click here.

Next Thursday is a Double Points Day. This is a great day to enter codes for any Christmas gifts you may have purchased. (Yes, my kids expect their Disney DVDs to be pre-opened, partly for this reason and also because I almost always have a rebate to send off! But I do NOT recommend this if the gift is for someone outside your immediate family. That's even a bit cheap for me.)

While you're there, add an item to your Wish List and be automatically entered in the "A Season Wrapped in Wishes Sweepstakes." My wish list contains several items, including a framed share of official Disney Stock!

Time-Lapse Video: Grand Floridian's Gingerbread House Construction

Thursday's Tip

Visiting Walt Disney World during the holidays? In addition to taking in the festivities in the parks, you'll want to visit the deluxe resorts to view the Christmas decorations. The Grand Floridian, with its enormous gingerbread house, is especially inviting! But one resort area you might not think to visit is the focus of today's tip: the Ft. Wilderness campground.

Did you know that many campers bring their own light and decorations displays? We're not just talking a string of paper lanterns--there are rather elaborate displays, including inflatable characters and large lawn ornaments. Many of the Ft. Wilderness seasonal guests are "regulars"--meaning, they visit WDW every holiday season--and they take their holiday decorating very seriously.

So, take a stroll off the beaten path and enjoy the unconventional holiday displays that Ft. Wilderness has to offer.

Winter Closures/Refurbishments at WDW

Closures and refurbishments are continuous at Walt Disney World, but Disney seems to kick it up a notch when winter comes. Surprisingly, attractions rehabs seem to be fewer than in some winters. But resort pools are, predictably, getting their yearly facelift. Here are the current and upcoming closures:

Magic Kingdom
  • Magic Carpets of Aladdin: closed December 6-19.
  • The Crystal Palace: closed January 3-February 13.
  • Splash Mountain: closed January 3-February 27.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

  • Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular: closed January 11-15.
  • Sounds Dangerous: currently operating on seasonal schedule.

Water Parks & Resorts

  • Typhoon Lagoon: closed through January 9.
  • Blizzard Beach: closed January 10-March 20.
  • Animal Kingdom Lodge--Uzima Pool: closed January 4-29. (Guests may use Samawati Springs Pool at Kidani Village.)
  • Yacht & Beach Club--Luna Park Pool: closed January 18-February 5. (Guests may use Stormalong Bay or the two leisure pools)
  • Old Key West--Main Pool: closed February 1-28. (Guests may use leisure pools throughout the resort. Shuttle service to the feature pool at Saratoga Springs will be available.)

Happy Birthday, Miley!

To tweeners everywhere, she is known as Hannah Montana, but today it's Miley Cyrus who celebrates her 17th birthday. Born in Franklin, Tennessee (just a few miles from us!) to parents Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, Destiny (her given name) became known as Miley because she almost always had a smile on her face. (Get it? "Smiley" morphed into "Miley.")
Happy birthday, Miley!

Thursday's Tip

Wow, I was halfway through Thursday before I realized it was Thursday...and I needed to post a Thursday's Tip! And, since next Thursday is Thanksgiving, and I will be enjoying time with my family and NOT posting, I thought I'd make this week's tip in the spirit of that holiday. Today's tip: pay it forward.

Here are just a few ways to "pay it forward" at Walt Disney World:
  • Leaving the park early? Instead of turning in that rented stroller, why not let a family just coming in the gates use it?
  • Got FastPasses you don't intend to use? Pass them along to another family.
  • See a dad with an expectant preschooler scrounging through his pocket for a coin for the pressed penny machine? Give him one of your shiny new pennies.
  • Let a mom with a toddler cut in line at the restroom.
  • Offer someone your seat on the monorail.
  • Bring enough illuminating bracelets/necklaces to share with kids around you as you're waiting for the parade to start. (You can buy a whole package of them for just a dollar!)
  • Bring a few extra cheap ponchos (the kind that cost $1 or less) and GIVE them away when it starts to rain. Sure, it might cost you a buck or two, but you'll make someone's day!
These are just a few ideas...the possibilities are endless. I fully believe in being a cheap-o, so that I can afford to be generous! How do you "pay it forward"?

Space Mountain Refurbishment Update

The "new and improved" Space Mountain is now in soft opening, meaning it hasn't officially opened but if you're lucky enough to be visiting the Magic Kingdom this week, you might just get to ride it. Here's a rundown of a few of the changes and updates:

  • Most notable (at least the first thing you notice) is the new signage, featuring neon green lettering.

  • The queue has been updated to more effectively incorporate the FastPass line.

  • Another significant change is the addition of video games. More than twenty screens with multiple controllers are now available to entertain guests while they wait. The short games (each lasts about 60 seconds) are a version of the classic Asteroids game.

  • The loading and unloading areas are now enclosed, prohibiting guests from seeing the track area.

  • Structural improvements to the actual track have been made, but the feel of the ride is not significantly altered.

Bottom line: the attraction has a sleeker, more modern look. But there aren't significant changes to the actual ride itself. Good news for fans of the original!

Thursday's Tip

Or, rather, Thursday's Tips. Today's tips are all about Advanced Dining Reservations, or ADRs. If you plan to eat in any of Disney's table service restaurants, especially those offering character meals or fine dining, it's a good idea to have ADRs. It's absolutely essential if you'll be traveling during a free dining promotion (usually in the fall). Here are a few tips:
  • When booking one of the princess meals (Cinderella's Royal Table at the Magic Kingdom or Akershus in Epcot), mark your calendar and start calling 407-WDW-DINE at exactly 180 days prior to your trip. Seriously. These things sell out in hours, if not minutes--at least the primo reservation times.
  • Give Disney's online ADR system a try. I still recommend calling for the hard-to-get character meals, but being able to book anytime is a nice convenience.
  • Want to try a character meal but aren't picky about which one? Try one of the less expensive meals, such as the Crystal Palace (Pooh characters) or the Tusker House (Donald & friends).
  • If you have days on property when you're not planning to visit the parks, this is a great chance to try one of the fine dining restaurants at the resorts or even a resort character meal. You'll infuse your day with more Disney fun and can have a relaxing meal without worrying that you're eating up valuable park time!
  • Finally, it's never too late! Even if you arrive on property without ADRs, you can call 407-WDW-DINE (there's actually a button for it on Disney resort phones) and see what's still available. Guests often cancel at the last minute, so stop by your desired restaurant when you get to the park, and you might just luck out!

Up Available on DVD and Blu-Ray Today!

And, wow, are there deals to be had! Target is offering a $10 off store coupon when you purchase both Up and Monsters, Inc. on Blu-Ray. There is currently a manufacturer's coupon for $8 off of the Monsters, Inc. Blu-Ray, as well as an unconfirmed rumor that a $10 off coupon will be available starting today for Up. If you use all three coupons (most Targets will allow you to "stack" manufacturer coupons with store coupons), you could save $28 on the pair of discs. My target is listing both Blu-ray discs for $26.99, making your final cost $24.98 plus tax for both ($12.49 each!).

Target also price matches, so if you find the titles cheaper elsewhere, just take in the sale ad and they will either give it to you at that price or refund the difference if you've already purchased it. Sorry, no matching for online prices.

Or, go to Best Buy, where the prices listed are $23.99 for the Up Blu-Ray and $18.99 for Monsters, Inc., with a $10 instant savings when you buy both. Use the same two manufacturer's coupons mentioned above, and your grand total will be $14.98 plus tax for both (only $7.49 each!).

If that's not enough, Bird's Eye is also offering a $5 rebate when you buy the Up Blu-Ray and two Voila! bag meals. There is also a $4 rebate from New World Pasta. Depending on the rebate requirements (original receipts or not, proof of purchase, etc.), you could possibly get BOTH rebates, making the total cost for both movies just $5.98 plus the cost of the food items purchased!

What are you waiting for? Run, don't walk, to your nearest Target or Best Buy!

UPDATE: $10 off coupon for Up can be accessed here!

Space Mountain Refurbishment Photos

The iconic Tomorrowland ride, Space Mountain, has been closed for refurbishment during our last two WDW vacations. When we were there in May, the Tomorrowland Transit Authority (TTA) was also closed. I admit it: I was bummed. I love the TTA, a breezy ride around Tomorrowland that takes you right through Space Mountain. Perfect for those that are too chicken to actually ride Space Mountain but still want to see it! Fortunately, on our last visit, TTA was back up and running. Here are a few pics I took from the TTA of Space Mountain, with refurbishment still in progress.

Space Mountain is schedule to reopen later this month!

Thursday's Tip

You probably already know that Disney offers a free planning DVD. But did you know that they also offer free customized maps? They're lovely, and quite a bit larger than the maps that are available in the parks. So, you can plan your touring route in advance and be prepared when you get there! Another great way to build anticipation. Click here to order yours.

Food & Wine Festival

Epcot's annual Food & Wine Festival is coming to a close this week. We were able to visit during the event this year. Here are a few pics, including menu shots. Unfortunately, we didn't partake of any of the delights. I was traveling with some not-so-adventurous eaters (my family), but we were also too determined to pig out at our favorite bakery in France and didn't want to spoil that experience! Still, the offerings looked--and smelled--wonderful!

Hope you had a safe, fun Halloween!

Artist Warned...Then Banned

OK, so banned may be a harsh word. Let's just say that Vanessa Carlton probably won't be asked back to perform at any of the Disney parks in the near future.

While we were at WDW, we had the luck to be touring Epcot during the final of Ms. Carlton's three sets of the Eat to the Beat! concert series on October 21 (part of the Food & Wine Festival). My husband had never heard of her and was pretty disinterested, but I remembered her song "A Thousand Miles," so I stopped just long enough to snap this quick photo.

Little did we know that we had missed the excitement. Apparently, during her first set, Ms. Carlton let an F-bomb slip. At the conclusion of that set, she was warned by Disney employees to watch her language--after all, this is a family environment (can't get much more family oriented than Disney!). While she managed to keep it clean during the second show, apparently she had a slip of the S-word during the third set. Perhaps prophetically, she uttered, "I'm so fired now." Yes, Ms. Carlton. Yes, you are. Or, rather, asked to never perform at Epcot again. Now, whether that request extends to the other Disney parks, I can't say. But I'd say it's a fair guess that she won't be hanging out with Mickey and the gang anytime soon.

Thursday's Tip

Today's tip is mostly for those with small children and those who have been to Walt Disney World several times: take a day off from the parks to explore! For small kids, it's great to have a day between touring to sleep late and get to bed early--this helps counter the break-neck pace that many of us keep, trying to squeeze in every last minute of fun at the parks (guilty!). But many frequent visitors to WDW have failed to explore what Disney has to offer outside of the four main parks. What a shame! There are so many things to do--many that are free!--that won't take up your valuable theme park tickets but still provide lots of fun!

Some examples:

  • Spend a day touring the resorts. All the WDW resorts are elaborately themed. This is a good chance to see where you might want to stay on your next visit. In addition, most have daily activities planned for kids (also mostly free).

  • Shop and eat your way through Downtown Disney. Home of the ginormous World of Disney store, a Legostore, and a great fountain to play in, there's plenty to keep you busy for an afternoon or longer.

  • Have tea in the beautiful Garden View Tea Room (Grand Floridian), an inexpensive alternative to a full meal in this deluxe resort.

  • Stroll on the Boardwalk. While you're there, take a boat (or two or three) to Disney's Hollywood Studios, Epcot, or the other resorts in the area. Better yet, rent a surrey and pedal to them!

Remember that Disney transportation is free to guests, so you can hop a bus to just about any part of Disney property and explore!

Southwest Makes a Good Deal Even Better

If you follow the Disney crowd calendar or the resort rate schedule, you know that early December, as well as most of January and early February can be an inexpensive time of year to plan a WDW vacation. (Basically, any time that most schools are still in session.)

Southwest has a deal going now with rates as low as $25 one way! Other rates are as low as $50 and $75 one way. That could make your flight to Orlando as cheap as $50 plus taxes and fees! Of course, rules apply:
  • Fares do not include federal excise tax of $3.60 per takeoff and landing, airport-assessed passenger facility charges (PFC) of up to $9, and government-imposed September 11th Security Fee of up to $5 one-way.
  • Purchase by October 29, 2009, 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.
  • Travel Dec. 2 - Dec. 16, 2009 and Jan. 5 - Feb. 10, 2010.
  • Travel valid every day except Sundays.

Hurry! As you can see, this rate will not last. To check rates or book your flight, click here.

ADRs Revert to 180 Day System

For those of you planning a Walt Disney World vacation for spring break (or any time between now and late April), it's time to make those Advanced Dining Reservations! For some time, Disney has been operating on a 90-day system, meaning you could only call to make ADRs (or book online) for travel dates 90 days in advance. Beginning today, that time frame switches back to 180 days. This is likely the result of Disney's "Buy 4, Get 7" deal, as this will greatly increase the number of guests using the Dining Plan.

Well...what are you waiting for? Call (407) WDW-DINE today!

Back from the Happiest Place on Earth

My family just returned from our second WDW vacation this year! This was a rather last-minute (well, at least in terms of my usual Disney planning MO) trip. With a week off school for fall break and almost-too-good-to-be-true deals, we just couldn't resist.

The weather was quite a change from the record temps in Lake Buena Vista just a couple of weeks ago. We weren't as prepared for the cool weather as I would have liked, but it warmed up as the week went on, and we experienced near-perfect Disney weather on our last day in the parks.
In coming posts, I'll share some of our new experiences, old favorites, and other impressions from our trip. I'll whet your appetite with this: As a seasoned deal-finder and admitted cheap-o, this was a great trip for us to try out some of the money-saving practices that I share with clients. How did it go? We didn't feel as if we missed out on anything by cutting a few corners, and our trip came in over $200 UNDER our rather slim budget!

Want to know how you can do the same for your family? Let Affording the Mou$e help you plan your next WDW vacation, and we guarantee we'll save you money--or you get yours back!

Disney Stores Host Costume Event

Who doesn't love a great (free) party? On Wednesday, Oct. 21, 3:30-5:30 p.m., drop by your local Disney Store for fun, games, prizes, and a costume parade. Children three and older who wear their favorite costumes will receive a free gift!

Sadly, my princesses will have to miss this event. But don't feel too sorry for them--we'll be hanging out with Mickey and the gang at Walt Disney World that day! I would love to hear about the event from anyone who attends.

Thursday's Tip

Keeping your food budget in check during your Walt Disney World vacation can be a challenge. But one of the easiest ways to save up to $10/day per person in your family is by eating breakfast in your hotel room before going into the parks. All Disney resorts have coffee makers in the rooms, so you can easily heat water for instant oatmeal, grits, or other hot cereals. Granola bars, fresh fruit, and cold cereal also make quick, inexpensive breakfasts. Moderate and Deluxe resorts also have in-room refrigerators to keep milk, juice and fresh fruit cold.

An added bonus: many breakfast items you can prepare in your room are more healthful than the pastries that you might be tempted with in the parks. Just say NO to that $4 bagel!

Try Disney's Digital Books for Free

I am a self-proclaimed bibliophile. As someone who has worked in publishing, I have a perhaps unnatural preoccupation with the actual books themselves--the paper...the binding...the cover. So the world of digital books doesn't fascinate me perhaps as it should.

Still...a free deal is a free deal. And I can't pass up free. So, I'll be signing up for Disney Digital's free trial. You get 7 free books, as well as a Look and Listen book and a Story-builder Activity. Did I mention it is free? Try it for yourself here. Let me know what you think!

No More Seat-Saving at 4 MK Locations

You know 'em. Those people who put purses, hats, and backpacks in every chair of a table for ten with one lonely "seat-saver" guarding the table. Maybe you've even been them. Who am I kidding? I've been them! Well, Disney wants to eliminate this practice, as they claim it clogs up to 1/3 of a restaurant's seating capacity.

A new program--"The Basics"--is being tested at four Magic Kingdom locations: Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe, Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe, Columbia Harbour House, and Pinocchio Village Haus. Guests will now enter through a specific entrance of each restaurant and be met by a greeter. Menus are distributed, and guests are directed to the cash registers to order. With food in hand, they are then seated by another employee.

So, what about guests who just want to get off their feet--or parents who don't want to struggle with wiggly toddlers during the ordering process? It would seem they would be out of luck, at least at these locations. Signage outside Pecos Bill's reads: "Welcome. Our tables are reserved for guests who have received their food. Once you have received your food, we will help direct you to a table."

But while Disney is adding employees to help with seating, apparently they're eliminating the help with ordering. Pecos Bill's will now feature self-ordering kiosks.

Oh, and just one more change: roomy chairs with backs have been replaced with smaller, backless stools, allowing for an extra chair to be placed at each table. Hmmm...further motivation for you to "eat and run"?

I'm all for maximizing my time in the parks, but I'm not sure I'm a fan of these changes. I'll let you know what I think after my visit to the parks in a couple of weeks.

Thursday's Tip

"For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it?" (Luke 14:28, NASB)

Today's tip: create a vacation budget. I will be the first to admit that I hate budgets. I am extremely frugal, and I don't buy things with money I don't already have, but the idea of sitting down and putting it all on paper gives me the hives. That said, it is necessary--and even empowering--to create a realistic vacation budget.

I have a firm belief that most families, if they are willing to make a few sacrifices, can afford to visit Walt Disney World without financing the trip. You can read about some great ways to save in this post. I would never, NEVER advocate a client planning a vacation that he or she didn't already have the money to pay for. Never.

That said, your budget doesn't need to be a spreadsheet with multiple tabs. Mine is only about a page, and contains figures for the following possible expenses:
airfare and airport parking

  • car rental

  • gasoline

  • tolls

  • hotel

  • dining (both in the parks and off-site)

  • food/grocery purchases

  • park tickets

  • additional entertainment (movies, miniature golf, etc.)

  • souvenirs

  • other/misc. (I include character meals here, as they are "special" expenditures)

Many of these blanks are easy to fill in before the trip. Hotel, airfare, car rental, and park tickets should be arranged before your trip. But dining, entertainment, and souvenirs can vary a LOT with impulse buys. The budget helps you set parameters to avoid those impulses and make wise choices. Still, I try to set a liberal budget so that I'll be happily surprised if our trip comes in under budget.

Finally, keep track of your spending (save receipts or jot down each expenditure) and do a comparison of "estimated" to "actual." How'd you do? Use this as a guideline for future Disney vacation budgets!

Top 5 Food Deals at WDW

OK, I admit it...this post is really a matter of opinion. I mean, it's hard to quantify value when it comes to food. It's kinda like comparing apples to oranges. Or taco salad to quiche, as the case may be. Still, here are what I consider to be the top 5 food deals at Walt Disney World:

5. Animal Kingdom's Picnic in the Park. This to-go meal can be purchased for 2-6 guests, and you can choose the less-expensive sandwich version, or the slightly pricier ham or chicken meal. Both come with sides, dessert, and bottled water. Prices start at $17.99 for two people and go up to $56.99 for six. A great deal at less than $10/person!

4. Condiment bars. Many of the counter service restaurants around the World feature exceptional "dress your own" condiment bars. By adding enough toppings, you can turn a burger or potato into a meal. I'm especially fond of the taco bar at El Pirata y el Perico in the Magic Kingdom. For $5.99 you get two beef tacos, or for $7.29 you can have taco salad (my favorite). Top with lettuce, tomato, cheese, sour cream, and salsa as high as you can pile it!

3. Fresh produce. While this isn't a filling meal, you can complement a less nutritious offering, such as a hot dog, with a healthy side, such as a banana, for as low as $1. Fruit cups are around $3, and many counter service restaurants offer grapes or carrots as side dishes. Every park has at least one restaurant or cart with fresh produce choices, if you're willing to look. The Magic Kingdom has the most offerings (Liberty Square Market, Main Street Bakery, Toontown Farmer's Market, to name just a few). In Disney's Hollywood Studios you'll find Anaheim Produce. Sunshine Seasons Grab-n-Go in Epcot has a great selection. And the Animal Kingdom sells produce at Harambe Market.

2. The half rotisserie chicken with two sides. Three of the four parks have some variation of this meal that is large enough for two light eaters to share (and certainly enough for a parent to share with a small child). Sunshine Seasons (Epcot), Cosmic Ray's (MK), and Flame Tree BBQ (AK) all have a similar meal for under $10. For a little more at Flame Tree BBQ, you can get ribs instead of chicken.

1. I hesitate to tell you about this one. Really, I want to keep this little secret for myself. Oh, alright. My favorite food deal is in Epcot, tucked away in the World Showcase...in the country that is known for its food: France. For those of you who don't care to indulge in the extravagance (and expense) that is Chefs de France, but still want to experience the taste sensations, try Boulangeri Patisserie. This little counter service spot is in the rear of the pavilion. With just a few tiny tables outside, you'd never realize that they serve some of the same desserts and pastries as the other French restaurants--but at a fraction of the cost. Some items are as low as $1.95! My favorite value is the ham & cheese croissant. At just $3.25, it's a perfect light lunch. But don't stop there--you must try the chocolate mousse! And maybe the quiche. But it's OK...you can indulge...nothing on the menu is over $6!!! It's a little out of the way, but definitely worth finding.

My daughter, enjoying the chocolate mousse!

Character Changes Around the World

Character encounters are a favorite part of Walt Disney World. While the classic characters are always on hand around the World, peripheral characters seem to change with the wind (or with the current box office climate). Here are some current and upcoming character changes:

  • The Peter Pan characters meet-n-greet in the Magic Kingdom has moved from Adventureland to Fantasyland (now near TinkerBell's Fairy Treasures).

  • Thumper and Miss Bunny have been added to the character encounters in Animal Kingdom at Camp Mickey & Minnie (replacing Koda and Kenai from Brother Bear).

  • Terrance will soon be joining the Fairies at Pixie Hollow (Toontown in the Magic Kingdom), likely replacing Iridessa.

  • Characters from the new animated film, The Princess and the Frog, will be added in the near future, most likely also in Toontown. Characters will include Tiana, Naveen, and Dr. Facilier.

On a related note, we got our first glimpse of a live Tiana at Disney on Ice's Celebrations this weekend. It was a great show, and we loved seeing this newest princess in person! Hoping to catch her show on the Liberty Belle in Frontierland on our upcoming trip! (It's not supposed to officially start until late October, but we're hoping to hit a dry run before the official opening.)

Thursday's Tip

Every little girl wants to be a princess, and the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutiques at Downtown Disney and the Magic Kingdom can help make that happen--for a price! At a whopping $189.95 for the premium "Castle Package," your little princess will get: hairstyle, makeup, nails, costume, and accessories. But for less than a third of that price, you can do it yourself!

Consider the biggest chunk of that purchase: the costume. Right now, You can purchase most of the Disney Princess costumes for under $40 in Disney stores and online. If you're able to wait a few weeks or months, you can sometimes get them at half of that! I've purchased some Disney costumes for as little as $12 at the right time of year. Accessories often run as little as $3-5 too.

Nails? Try around $2 for a bottle of polish. Makeup? You can buy most anything that glitters in a discount store for under $5. Hairstyle? For a princess, start with a simple bun and add a tiara and glitter spray--you're all set! For the pop star look, you can purchase colored spray, glittering hair wands, and even small clip-on hairpieces! All of this at a fraction the cost. Plus, you'll be saving valuable park time (if you were planning on visiting the Magic Kingdom location) that can be spent on your favorite attractions instead.

Disney Announces 2010 Focus: Give a Day, Get a Disney Day

In 2009, the "What Will You Celebrate?" promotion let you "earn" a free day at Disney just for being born. In 2010, you'll have to work a little harder for that free day, but the rewards are much richer, in my opinion. Beginning January 1, the first one million guests who pre-register and complete a day of volunteer work through the HandsOn Network will receive a one-day admission ticket to Walt Disney World or Disneyland.

"In 2010, we want to recognize and add one more reason for celebration: the contributions people make to their communities every day," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "We want to inspire one million volunteers--people who will invest time and energy to make their own communities and neighborhoods a better place."
Now, I love a good deal more than most people. But a good deal that also encourages volunteerism and community involvement is about as good as it gets. Kudos to Disney for this one!

As mentioned above, the HandsOn Network will be essential in tracking volunteer work and keeping guests accountable for actually doing the work. You can't simply pick any organization to help--it must be approved. However, the organization works with over 70,000 non-profit agencies, so there's a great chance that some of your favorites will be eligible.

New Discount Coming?

Rumors are spreading about a possible discount that will be available next week. It is thought to be a "Buy 4 days, Get 7" deal, much like one that was available earlier in the year, meaning you would purchase tickets and resort stay for 4 days, and you get three more days of tickets and resort stay for free. Value resorts would have a similar “Buy 5, Get 7″ deal. Travel dates are rumored to be October 1, 2009 through March 31, 2010, with booking through December 31, 2009.

For those needing both a room and tickets, this is one of the most valuable discounts offered--much better than the free dining that is currently being offered, in my humble opinion. Stay tuned for confirmation and details.

Thursday's Tip

So you're going to Disney World in the fall, and you purchased the free dining. (Incidentally, the free dining isn't exactly free--it precludes you from getting better room discounts, so you actually "pay" a price to get that free perk. Still, it's often the best deal, depending on your family's eating habits.) But I digress.

Back to Thursday's Tip: So you had the dining plan and you find yourself at the end of your vacation with leftover snack credits. What's a family to do? Down six Mickey ice cream bars as you exit the park? No need to do that (although, it sounds fun!). Just hop into a gift shop and purchase a few prepackaged goodies for the trip home. Most gift shops in both the parks and resorts have cookies, candies, pretzels, etc., that can be purchased with dining snack credits. It's always a good idea to ask before purchasing, as some items are considered "novelties" rather than food items. And when all else fails, buy a bottled water or soft drink. Don't let those snack credits go to waste! After all, you paid for them--even if they were "free."

Disney Transportation Management Changes

It was a rough summer for safety at Walt Disney World. Three employee fatalities within weeks of each other. Perhaps the most notable being young monorail driver Austin Wuennenberg. Two weeks later, two Disney buses collided with each other. And just last week, bus service was disrupted due to a suspicious tracking device. It's no wonder Disney has decided to shake up management. (Of course, the official word is that these changes are in no way related to the aforementioned "issues" with Disney transportation.) Read details of staff changes/additions here.

Are Deep Discounts on the Way Out?

Now that the recession is over (at least according to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke), are we going to see those lovely discounts that Disney has been tossing out left and right go away? Disney CFO Tom Staggs was non-committal on this one at a recent Goldman Sachs investor conference: "I think that’s something that will evolve over time. The question really becomes how fast the consumer shows up with their wallets and looks to book aggressively. And there you’re really talking about predicting the timing and pace of the recovery, which I wouldn’t want to venture to far out on a limb on."

Hmmm...so what does that mean? I'd say, book 'em while you can, folks. The days of peak season discounts may well be behind us. But there will always be discounts to be had--you just need to know where to look for them!

Mitchel Musso at DHS Today!

You know him as "Oliver" on "Hannah Montana," or perhaps as "Jeremy" on "Phineas & Ferb." Disney Channel star Mitchel Musso will be signing his self-titled CD (on, you guessed it, Walt Disney Records) at Disney's Hollywood Studios today, 1-2 p.m. Eastern time. If you're in the area, stop by and say hello.

An aside: Last year, Musso came to my daughter's school as part of the "Clean Hands Are Cool Hands" initiative. She tried to tell me that "Oliver" was at her school. I didn't believe her (thought perhaps they watched a DVD of him or something), until I saw him on the evening news! Next time I'll believe my little pumpkin!

Thursday's Tip

Today's tip is a preparation tip, and it's especially important for those with young children or those who lead a rather sedentary lifestyle: start walking! Several weeks, if not months, before your Walt Disney World vacation, it's a great idea to start taking daily walks with the family to get used to the amount of walking in the parks. There's no way around it: you will do a LOT of walking at WDW. Even kids in strollers will have to walk through lengthy lines and leave the stroller behind. In Fantasyland, where families with young tots tend to spend most of their time, stroller parking is quite far from several attractions.

So, take this advice to heart, and start preparing now (unless, of course, you enjoy carrying your four-year-old long distances!). You might even consider purchasing new "park shoes" and breaking them in on these walks. Besides the payoff on your trip, you'll enjoy fun family time and everyone will reap the benefits of a healthy heart!

Will Disney Bring Back "Captain EO"?

Since the stunning death of Michael Jackson, we've heard buzzings that Disney might revive it's popular "Captain EO" 3-D film featuring the mega-star. The short film, which closed in 1997, made its debut at Disneyland in 1986 but was also shown at Epcot, as well as Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris.

At the recent D23 Expo in Anaheim, Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed that there are no current plans to bring back the feature. Still, he didn't rule it out entirely: "We are looking at it. It's the kind of thing that, if we did it, would get a fair amount of attention and we'd want to make sure we do it right."

What do you think? Should Captain EO be allowed to, once again, deliver his musical gift? Or, is this merely capitalizing on the death of a legend?

Big Changes Coming at WDW

Disney has just announced big changes that finally bring validity to two rumors that have been circling the net for months, even years. Let's start with the biggest.

The Magic Kingdom, specifically Fantasyland, is about to get its most sweeping overhaul in the park's history. Let me sum it up in one word: Princesses! Yes, Disney is going to cash in on perhaps its biggest attraction in the re-vamp. (Who hasn't marveled at the marketing coup that IS the Disney Princesses...and now also the Disney Fairies? Genius!) At the center of the changes will be the addition of a new Little Mermaid-themed ride. There will also be extensive additions of meet-n-greet areas for most of the major princesses which promise more interaction with characters. Oh, and did I mention they will be adding a Pixie Hollow area too? And preschool parents will be thrilled to hear that they plan to relocate and also double the seating capacity of Dumbo.

Sadly, this "progress" will mean the demise of much of Toontown, but Disney promises Mickey & Minnie will have new homes near the park entrance. And Goofy's Barnstormer will remain. (Whew! That's the only coaster my kids will ride!)

The new and improved Fantasyland is schedule to open in 2012, with Pixie Hollow following in 2013.

On a smaller scale, changes are coming for Disney's Hollywood Studios. Apparently that footage being shot back in May will finally be put to use, as Disney has officially acknowledged the refurbishment of Star Tours. Debuting in 2011, the 2.0 version will include 3-D effects and characters from the prequels.

TTA Reopens

One of my favorite ways to cool off on a hot day and see parts of the Magic Kingdom that you don't usually see is the Tomorrowland Transit Authority (TTA). The attraction had been closed for refurbishment (due in part to the refurbishment of Space Mountain) for several months, but reopened over the weekend. The ride (which, honestly, will always be the WEDway PeopleMover to me) is pretty much the same as before--no earth-shattering changes. It still goes by Space Mountain, although for now you see mostly black screens which hide the ongoing construction there, rather than the ride in progress. (FYI, Space Mountain is schedule to reopen in late November.)

Our family missed this attraction on our last visit, so we look forward to riding the "new and improved" version on our next trip. Oh, and just maybe our oldest will be ready for Space Mountain too! (Well...maybe.)

Disney Documentary Premiers at TIFF

Waking Sleeping Beauty premiered this past week at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, directed by Oscar-nominated Disney producer Don Hahn (whose credits include Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King), is a documentary about the animation revival Disney experienced in the 80s and 90s, with a string of blockbuster successes. Not sure when Waking Sleeping Beauty will release to the public (I'm guessing it won't have a theatrical release, but rather DVD), but I'll be eager to view it! To read a review, click here.

Thursday's Tip

Here's a simple planning tip: order the free vacation planning DVD that Disney offers. In fact, I order one every year whether or not I have a trip planned in the near future! For starters, it has a ton of great information about resorts and attractions. It usually features a "What's New" section so you can skip the other info if you've been to WDW numerous times. But, then again, why would you want to? Because it's really fun to watch! In fact, our family watches it several times to build anticipation before a trip. (Or, conversely, when it has been a while since our last trip and we're missing the Mouse!)
Disney allows you to order one every 6 months, but they usually update them just once per year so that's as often as you need to order. To request your free, no obligation DVD, click here. Happy viewing!

Luxo Jr. Appears at Disney's Hollywood Studios

Luxo Jr., the bouncing lamp seen in introductions to Pixar movies, is making live appearances at Disney's Hollywood Studios, near the Toy Story Mania attraction. Luxo doesn't really say anything, but he does express himself through, er, dance.

On a related note, Disney and Pixar are being sued by Luxo, the Norwegian lamp maker (see photo above), for copyright infringement.

Theme Park Etiquette

This post could just as easily be titled "My Theme Park Pet Peeves," as it mostly describes the behavior that I find annoying while visiting Walt Disney World. And while I know that none of my readers are that person, I thought you might enjoy commiserating with me about him or her. So, here's my list of annoying behavior (most of which I have personally witnessed):
  • The Mob Stop: This is when a group of, say, six or more people stop suddenly in the middle of the walkway--usually to have a discussion about where to eat, what attraction to visit next, or to argue about the closest path to said attraction. Hey, let's keep it moving, people! Or remove yourselves from the path and continue your discussion on one of the fine benches that are readily available throughout the parks.
  • The Wall: A close cousin to the Mob Stop, the Wall is a group of people walking slowly across a path five- or six-wide...thereby prohibiting faster walkers from passing. C'mon! Part like the Red Sea, people!
  • Totem Poles: Sticking with the theme of blocking, these are the folks who, just minutes before a parade or street performance is about to begin, pop a toddler up onto their shoulders, thus blocking your previously perfect view. Seriously? So not OK!
  • Photog Hogs: You've seen 'em...you've waited for 'em...the guy who needs just one more shot of his kid with Cinderella. Oh, and one with just the baby...now one with the oldest...oh, and could you take one of all of us? Uh...no. Get your picture, and then get going!
  • The Flasher: Really, how many times do they have to repeat the "No Flash Photography" request to get through to some people? Hey, Mr. Flasher Dude, you can buy a postcard of that scene in the gift shop on the way out, 'kay? And it will be flawless. So let's just follow directions from now on, 'kay?

This is, of course, just a start. I haven't even covered the area of line-jumping (which has so many variations that perhaps it warrants an entire post of its own). What about you? Got any theme park pet peeves you'd like to share? Just remember, this is a family site. Let's keep it clean!

Thursday's Tip

It's raining in Nashville today, which made me think of a simple, yet vitally important, planning tip: pack your rain ponchos! We all know about Florida weather--hot and steamy one minute, torrential rain the next. That's why it's always a good idea to pack a rain poncho for everyone in your group.

My family has two types of ponchos: our more expensive, heavy-duty ponchos and our cheap, throw-away ponchos. If rain is almost guaranteed in the forecast, we pack the good ones (see my husband and youngest daughter in the pic below). There's no reason to avoid the parks--there's plenty of indoor attractions, and the rain often thins out the crowd a bit. But having a sturdy poncho can make a big difference in how you feel about the rain by the end of the day! But no matter what the forecast, we ALWAYS pack enough of the small disposable ponchos for everyone (like the one my daughter in the middle is wearing), as well as an extra or two for the stroller or in case one rips. These can be purchased for $1 or less at your local discount store. Or...they can be purchased for considerably more at Disney gift shops. (You may not see them in the shops, but once the rain starts they'll be available. Trust me, Disney will not miss an opportunity to make a few bucks.)

Rain won't dampen your fun at Walt Disney World, as long as you're prepared!

Thieves Busted in Multi-Park Ticket Scam

Ever wonder why Disney scans your fingerprint when you enter the ticket gate? (That's "biometric technology," by the way.) That simple move actually helped them bust up a $130,000 ticket scam this month. Watch the full story here.

This is another cautionary tale about buying tickets from a reliable vendor.
