The most common reason I hear for why a family has not taken a Walt Disney World vacation is the expense. I get it. I really do. Even using all the savings tips I offer here on the site, a Disney vacation is still going to cost a decent chunk of change. So our Thursday's Tip(s) will focus on saving $ elsewhere and putting that savings in a designated Disney fund.
Here's how it works: If you save money that you normally would have spent, such as skipping a morning cup of Joe at your favorite java joint, put that money in the Disney fund. If you come into "found" money (a rebate or coupon for something you would have purchased anyhow... an unexpected bonus at work), put the cash in the Disney fund. If you typically eat out twice a week, stay home one of those nights and put the money you would have spent in the Disney fund.
Pretty simple method, eh? And it adds up...fast! And not only will you be saving money for your vacation, you might also save a few calories too! Here's a deal from Amazon to get you started: order any of these three eligible Disney Blu-ray/DVD Combo Packs, and you'll save $20. Boom! That's $20 in your fund! Most are priced from around $21.99 to $25.99, which is a great deal anyhow, so the bonus savings is the proverbial "icing on the cake." If you missed any of these when they first released, this is a great chance to snag them. Click the link below to see the selections and order.

My husband and I went to Disney together for our honeymoon, which was our wedding gift from all of our family and friends. We had such a blast that we knew we'd be going back many times. However, since the trip was paid for, we also knew that we wouldn't be able to go back and have the same experience on our own budget. This past October, we rented a condo for $536 - for the WEEK - at Windsor Hills, and we drove down to FL from Boston. We started saving at the beginning of May and making payments on things as we could, which made it much easier to plan.
ReplyDeleteWe saved money on airfare by driving (cost of gas = ONE plane ticket) and ended up sharing the gas and condo with my parents. Windsor Hills is one exit from the parks and, once you park at one park for the day, you can park at any others the same day. We also had a kitchen, so we were able to save on meals by eating breakfast at the condo, and having snacks there.
Obviously, we didn't get to take part in extra magic hours, we had to use our own car and pay for parking, and the tickets themselves were an expense, but the website http://www.knowbeforeugo.com/ offers a 5-day park hopper ticket for the price of a 3-day ticket, and discounts many other attraction tickets, such as Universal, Cirque du Soleil, etc... We managed to keep the trip under $2000 for four people by researching our other options AND, because we saved so much, I was able to purchase tickets to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween party for all of us.
We'd love to stay on the property again, but we're going back in November, rented the same condo, sharing it with some friends, and driving down, and we've managed to keep our costs to a minimum. I highly recommend it. You still get a fantastic Disney experience, you get to spend time in a comfortable place and save quite a bit of money at the same time!
Great saving!
ReplyDeleteWow,great savings! Was there a "catch" with the website you used to purchase your park tickets?
ReplyDeleteI almost added to my comment above to be extremely cautious in purchasing tickets from anyone but Disney. I do know of a few authorized Disney ticket outlets (Undercover Tourist is my favorite; perhaps the one mentioned above is authorized too...I'm not familiar with it). Just know that if the savings seems huge, it's likely NOT an authroized dealer, and you have little recourse if there is something fishy with the deal. You can save some $ from authorized vendors, but it's rarely more than around $20 off per multi-day ticket. Any more savings than that and I would be very skeptical.
