Wednesdays with Walt
"In planning a new picture, we don’t think of grownups and we don’t think of children, but just of that fine, clean, unspoiled spot down deep in every one of us that maybe the world has made us forget." --Walt Disney

"Mickey Mouse popped out of my mind onto a drawing pad twenty years ago on a train ride from Manhattan to Hollywood at a time when business fortunes of my brother Roy and myself were at lowest ebb and disaster seemed right around the corner." --Walt Disney

Wednesdays with Walt
We're heading to a homeschool convention tomorrow in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Any readers joining us there?) In light of our trip, this quote by Walt struck me as interesting. Yes, we make learning a priority in our homeschool. But learning can be so entertaining that sometimes it doesn't even feel like work! And while Walt Disney World wasn't created to be a schoolroom, we find it to be quite educational at times.
"I would rather entertain and hope that people learned something than educate people and hope they were entertained." --Walt Disney

Here's a great quote from Walt regarding money:
"Money is something I understand only vaguely, and I think about it only when I don’t have enough to finance my current enthusiasm, whatever it may be. All I know about money is that I have to have it to do things. I don’t want to bank my dividends, I’d rather keep my money working…. Money--or, rather the lack of it to carry out my ideas--may worry me, but it does not excite me. Ideas excite me."

Walt truly was an inspired leader.
Of all the things I have done, the most vital is coordinating the talents of those who work for us and pointing them towards a certain goal. --Walt Disney

Wednesday's with Walt
I'm feeling this quote from Walt today, as I have several "projects" on my desk that seem to have been there indefinitely. I think it's time for a few self-imposed deadlines!
"Everyone needs deadlines. Even the beavers. They loaf around all summer, but when they are faced with the winter deadline, they work like fury. If we didn’t have deadlines, we’d stagnate."
--Walt Disney

In order to make good in your chosen task, it’s important to have someone you want to do it for. The greatest moments in life are not concerned with selfish achievements but rather with the things we do for people we love and esteem, and whose respect we need. -- Walt Disney
Well said, Walt.

Wednesdays with Walt
Since it's the beginning of a new year and many of us are coming up with goals and plans for 2012, I found this quote from Mr. Disney to be quite appropriate:
Think beyond your lifetime, if you want to do something truly great. Make a fifty-year master plan. A fifty-year master plan will change how you look at the opportunities in the present.

Music has always had a prominent part in all of our products from the early cartoon days. I have had no formal musical training. Credit for the memorable songs and scores must, of course, go to the brilliant composers and musicians who have been associated with me through the years. – Walt Disney

"A man should never neglect his family for business." --Walt Disney
This is perfect timing for this quote from Mr. Disney, as I let my readers know that Affording the Mou$e will be somewhat MIA for the next week or two as I celebrate Christmas with my family. There may be a few posts here and there, but I plan to devote the majority of my Christmas break to relaxing and enjoying my crew. I encourage you, dear reader, to do the same! Merry Christmas!

I've always been bored with just making money. I've wanted to do things; I wanted to build things, to get something going.

Wednesdays with Walt
Walt Disney is probably one of the most quoted Americans of modern times. Walt was a great communicator, and he had a way of encapsulating wisdom in small soundbites. Because of this, I thought I'd start a new feature at Affording the Mou$e to share Walt's often profound words. We'll call it "Wednesdays with Walt." Here's one to start the series:
I can never stand still. I must explore and experiment. I am never satisfied with my work. I resent the limitations of my own imagination.
—Walt Disney
